Young people have a lot to think about

Newsroom is a safe place to talk and learn.

Bridging the gap
Between school and the modern world

At Newsroom tutors, we have conversations about the world, in ways that move beyond the school curriculum and kindle self-motivated life-long learning.

Based on a Montessori approach, we run online courses on issues that are up to the minute and reflect the news today; courses that provide a baseline in economics, history, politics, and the skills of critical thinking.

Young people need to be discerning consumers of news stories: aware of context, history, political and economic schools of thought, and conscious of where their information is coming from.

In the Newsroom, we contextualise and understand what is happening in the world today and why.

What we do

For young people who want a deeper understanding of the world.
  - Politics, Economics, History, Religion;
  - Context, Nuance and Perspective;
  - One-to-One Tutoring, and
  - Group Discussion and Debate.

The Montessori Approach

Emmett is a Montessori guide, which means he is here to guide conversations and to stimulate personal enquiry, not always to convey a specific list of facts, cover a curriculum or work to an exam. (Though he does that too.)

Although the approach leads to excellent exam results, Montessori education prioritises cradling and supporting an intellectual curiosity that lasts well beyond school into adult life.

The goal, whether discussing today's news or political history is not to convey one set of indisputable facts. Rather the goal is to offer context, and to provide structure and space for young people to develop and deepen their own opinions.

Emmett is a guide at the Montessori Place in Brighton, which is the only school in the UK to use Montessori principles all the way through to A-Level. These principles focus on creating a bespoke educational journey for each child and young person through self-directed learning.

Emmett is first guide to lead the school's students through Economics A-Level. He also leads a weekly class called Newsroom, focusing on introducing and contextualising the latest developments on the front covers of this week's newspapers at round-table discussions with the school's 15-18 year olds.

The Montessori Place's most recent Ofsted inspection in July 2025 returned a report of Outstanding across every area of assessment. The full report is available here
